Harold Darke's setting of In the Bleak Midwinter. One of my favourite Christmas carols.

Find the Holst setting here:http://youtu.be/-BNKmVmfdAo

Sung by Trinity college, Cambridge.

Alto part in this is much more interesting (polyphonic) than Holst, which is mostly stacked chords (like most 19th Century Carols). But Holst is nice too.

Beautiful arrangement of a sublime carol. Third verse romanticism a bit much though- "Enough for him a breast full of milk and a manger full of hay"? Well actually, no. Fortunately that breast was attached to an actual mother, who was essential to his survival in that stable.

I owe the person who posted this a considerable debt of gratitude. This advent was a low moment emotionally for me, but this gave me hope. Regardless of why you posted the video, know that you have done your fellow human being a great kindness.

Yes, better than the Holst and one of the best. Being quite a reasonable tenor I always used to look forward to this but seldom achieved a good rendition without a tear. Thank you, morphthing1, and a peaceful and blessed Christmas to you and all listeners here, from Rufus(rorrr)

I'm so sick of "Christmas songs". If you're going to sing about magical beings like santa clause, why not make the song beautiful and about the being that the season is for?#music #musiceveryday #christmas

As I expected. Dignified and well-written British music at its best.

I'm an atheist, but I suspend my disbelief a little at Christmastime. What else can you do when you hear things as beautiful as this?

Thank you for posting this and Holst's setting. I thought there was only one version. The best part about this video: the music sheet to the choral arrangement. Thank you. I'll definitely check out Holst's version as well.

The score displayed is from cpdl.org, and we're all grateful for it and for the upload. Note that there are two transcription errors in bars 7 (A on "stood" should be a G) and 11 (B on "len" should be a G). The sung version is correct. Thanks for posting.
