Jazz legend Billy Taylor, in a performance of his renown composition, "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free," featuring Victor Gaskin on bass and Curtis Boyd on drums.

"I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" is a song written by Billy Taylor & Dick Dallas. Originally recorded by Nina Simone in 1967 on her Silk & Soul album. Billy Taylor's own version (as "I Wish I Knew") was recorded November 12, 1963 and released on his Right Here, Right Now album (Capitol ST-2039) the year after. His 1967 instrumental take was later used as the theme music for The Film programme on BBC television.

Billy Taylor reports that "I wrote this song, perhaps my best known composition, for my daughter Kim. This is one of the best renditions I've done, because it is very spiritual."

Billy Taylor performed this piece so excellently at my grammar school, Sussex Avenue School in Newark, New Jersey back in the mid 1960's. What a time that was: his orchestra, all of us from KG to 8th grade singing this wonderful song on a Friday afternoon. I can't describe it, can't describe it. We had a wonderful principal Mrs. Side, she helped all of us, from every group, African-American, Italian-American, Puerto Rican American, etc. grow into great young people. My school still stands on Sussex Avenue in Newark, just a few blocks from the center of where the uprising happened during the late 1960's and ironically, just a few blocks from the church where Whitney Houston's funeral was held. Newark is back now, and I can see great things for its future. I hope I can become a part of that community again.

One of the greatest jazz songs if not the best of all times-always thought that Nina wrote this song!

Here in the UK, people 'of a certain age' think of the movies on hearing this because it was used for so long as the theme for the Film ## (insert year here) programme on the BBC. Then when you check out the whole Billy Taylor recording you hear how it's not just a killer theme; he 'jazzes-out' on it, it builds and gets better and better. This is pretty much perfection IMHO.

I have adored Billy Taylor and his wonderful music for my entire life. I stalked him and his trio everywhere up and down the streets of Manhattan, wherever they were playing. He came to know me from the frequency of my appearances in his audiences and would always wave at me, say hi, chat briefly, such a kind man. (I cannot believe no one has left a message for a year!) I still play his recordings all the time. Even after I moved to Virginia and had not seen him for a few years, he remembered me and gave me a big hug when he spotted me in the audience down at VCU, older but still in love with his music. He came here to see his friend who was Dean of the Arts School at VCU (Murray DePillars) and gave the most glorious concert I ever heard. It was hypnotic to watch Billy play, those long graceful fingers flying magically over the keyboard. I shall forever miss seeing and hearing him in person, but I am so glad I own all of his recording.

I hope more people learn about this great song from the Ford Commercial (Nina Simone's version) from the Super Bowl.

That feeling you get when you're playing your own piece and, coming to the end, realise what an exhilarating masterpiece it is.
