Sweetheart, I use it lightly because I don't know your name but it is not the Temptations, as always it's David Ruffin.

The original version of "I Want You Back" (called "I Want to Be Free") was written for Gladys Knight & the Pips, but then reassigned to Diana Ross when the song turned out better than the producers expected. When Berry Gordy happened upon the song, he had it revised with "the Frankie Lymon treatment" and given to the Jackson 5.

David's version is the best, regardless for whom the song was written! And I don't want to hear that it's apples versus oranges. Because you can compare apples and oranges. I like apples more than oranges. See what I mean?

Jackson 5 did it first.it was written for them. All the Motown acts covered each other for album cuts , but usually only one would have the single of it.

@BigBlueBeast David Ruffin did the song first. It was written for him but Motown put it on the shelf. This album wasn't released until 2004. It was originally due out in 1970 but was recorded in 1969

Who did this song first, David Ruffin or the Jackson 5? RIP David Ruffin and MJ!
