I feel like this isn't really a song about supers/metas, but about the fact that as we grow older, our worldviews become more complex, and we start to become disillusioned, so we no longer see a place for a perfectly idealized hero figure. You could replace Superman with Captain America, Jesus, King Arthur, Wonder Woman, any hero figure that fights for truth and justice. We start to see black/white and right/wrong morality as a weakness and begin to value pragmatism more than just doing the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing.

I see what you mean, but I don't quite agree. I love Superman for the ideals he urges us to be worthy of. I love Iron Man because he tells me that even if I think I'm a horrible person - even if, in some ways, I am - it still may be possible for me to do good in the world. They both speak to me of hope, just in different ways.

Yeah, a womanizer isn't exactly a positive role model, but at the same time, he's almost the normal one (as portrayed in the avengers). Emotionally scarred? PTSD? Imperfect? Check, check and check. I'm not saying he should be a goal to be like, but I think he's kinda relatable in that he's very human, flawed.

Strives to be a hero my ass. Iron Man went out of his way to be a villain during the Civil War. Superman drives himself to the brink of insanity because of problems he can't solve like corruption, teen suicide, diseases like cancer and AIDS. Stark has the cure for Cancer and Aids, but refuses to release it to the general public because "we're not ready" Sups is the hero that every hero tries to be like including Iron man. (Not so much Cap)

Ironman is a great symbol! Despite his dark past dealing weapons and his tragic character flaws, he manages, struggles, STRIVES to be a hero and a good man! Superman is the superhero equivalent of a trust fund kid. Never had to work hard a day in his life. Easy to be an immaculate symbol when your feet never have to touch the ground!
