A lot of people see this song as just a regular "I don't give a fuck" anthem, like so many other rappers do all the time. However, I think those people actually miss the point of this song quite a bit. It's actually a rather scathing critique of apathy, particularly in regards to social issues like environmentalism and prevention of disease as well as the idea of misanthropy as a popular trend. Notice that amid all the cries of "who gives a fuck", they never actually say a reason WHY they don't care. They never give a good reason for the apathetic, callous attitude presented by the characters portrayed in the song. The closest things to reasons presented are very nihilistic and defeatist excuses like "everybody's gonna die" or "I can't do anything about it", which all ring hollow when you notice that the self-destructive, cruel behavior they exhibit as a result of their oh-so-trendy apathy isn't actually doing anything to alleviate or even distract from the horrible shit happening around them, but is actually adding to it and making a bad situation worse. They are demonstrating the kind of hellish existence that not giving a shit can lead to, and even though the attitudes and behavior mentioned sound superficially awesome because of the way they are said (mostly due to the lack of concern), they are never actually rationalize them or present them in anything resembling a positive light. So what you end up having is a song that presents apathy and antisocial behavior as initially appealing, but ultimately detrimental and with very little to no worthwhile payoff. Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope might not have graduated high school, and indeed seem very poorly-educated, but songs like this lead me to believe that ICP might actually be a lot smarter than they let on.
