The tale of Stack Lee (his actual nickname) and Billy Lyons is a real St Louis crime committed on Christmas Night 1895.

I really like the pacific gas and electric version (Stagolee). Stagger Lee is the most bad ass dude ever. He would kick Bad Bad Leroy Browns ass!

I have to agree that none of these singers compare to Lloy Price. The others make the song sound so sterile, no soul, very plain. This version leaves me saying "Oh that was quite pleasant". Not "WoW" like this song should make ya feel.

Are you people arguing about which blue-eye-soul cover is the best? These artists are to be commended for honoring great music; but they are, at best, a shadow of the Blues masters. Stagger Lee is the embodiment of the bad-ass black hoodlum folk hero. You need to go back to Lloy Price, Wilson Picket, or Mississippi John Hurt to get the full emotion.
