"Never Been to Spain" from the composer. Three Dog Night made it famous but Hoyt Axton wrote it. From "Gotta Keep Rollin': The Jeremiah Years 1979 - 1981" which was released in 1999. This song was on at least two other previous albums. (Look at his guest artists helping out.) A true treasure. Enjoy!

Mark Dawson - vocals

Tony Johnson - guitar

John McEuen - banjo

Hoyt also had a brief but significant role in the 1979 movie classic, The Black Stallion

"In Oklahoma... or in a coma, what does it matter"This was the original lyric but the record company made Three Dog Night change it to "in oklahoma or arizona" because they didn't want to lose any sales from offended Okies.

He also wrote "Joy to the World", "The Pusher“ just to mention a few. His mother co-wrote “Heartbreak Hotel“…

Really love hoyts music and have enjoyed reading some of these comments about the great man. I have recorded a small tribute on my page, of one rare and one well known song by Mr Axton. Would love it if you'd check it out. Cheers x

I love Hoytin' >> wild man, got big hype when he was breaking in, as the 'folk singer' but he is a rockin' crazy big bad dude often in his early years. His song about L.A. loving it, ranks with Randy Newman's 'I Love LA' but much more rollicking. His mother wrote 'Heartbreak Hotel' that Elvis P recorded. He wrote the great song 'The Pusher' that Steppenwolf did, and he does a scary version of it Goddamn the Pusher!!! Did he pass away?

Just a thought: Many Viet Nam veterans came home with 2 stock phrases--either "It don't mean nothing" or "What does it matter"--47 years later, my husband still says it anytime something doesn't make sense.

I saw an interview with Hoyt, years ago. He said he was an Oklahoma vegetarian, would only eat Twinkies and mars bars, something like that. Cain't remember exactly.

Hoyt makes it casual and fun.

Hoyt's mama wrote Heartbreak Hotel and The King's ear told him Spain would be a great live show piece with his 32 piece orchestra's almighty horn section. He did it as part of his live show in '72 (and thankfully it was caught on tape for posterity from the San Antonio show filmed as part of the documentary ''Elvis On Tour''). Like Proud Mary and Tony Joe's Polk Salad Annie, Elvis never did studio versions of many of the live songs he enjoyed performing, but his joy in them (and ours!) is plain

They heard a neat song. His voice is what made it great. He was a musical genius and from all I hear, a wonderful guy. I'm sorry I'm really late on responding to your remark on Hoyt Axton, but I've had a few rocky years in a row health wise. I seem to be getting over it some now. Thanks so much for listening and taking the time to comment. It's appreciated! My best, Moppet

Through his mother, Hoyt's a cousin to the Boren political clan--exSen/Gov David and a bunch of scions....

I read a lot of the comments on the Sessions video I sent you. The uploader appears to really know a lot on Sessions. I read many of his comments and he said Hoyt wrote it in 68. I'd take his word until you find otherwise. It looks like your dates might have gotten turned around. Thanks for your comments. I hope this has helped a bit. My best, Moppet

Not sure, but I think Hoyt wrote it in 68. The gentelman who has Ronnie Session version up sounds REALLY knowledgeable about Sessions and told someone Hoyt wrote it in 68. Just wanted to pass that along. I was looking also. My best, Moppet
