amy trevena - this song by hoyt always makes me cry, I expect because it was on the top charts in Sept. of 1955 when I was born. Of course it was done by Mitch Miller then who absolutely ruined it. - just done too fast, like a march. Sparkey Rucker- a soul-blues singer also did much justice to this heart - felt ballad.

People forget the band behind the stars. Feel the difference guitarist Tommy Tomlinson made to Horton's music. Johnny's best music was not his.war songs but the Honky Tonk ones with that special 3 into 2 shuffle. Brian Battle

The greatest version of this marvellous song.

Well, they change 'darkies' in My Old Kentucky Home, too. It's plain that the Yellow Rosé is half White, tending to a yellow skin tone, so 'darky' would make more sense in context.

Every time they say "soldier," the original song had the work "darky." The lyrics were changed a few decades after the song's release. Although it saddens me that an artist's original work would be altered for the sake of political correctness and to avoid offending people who really shouldn't be offended, and this happened with many songs from the 1800s, I think soldier actually sounds better in this song. Although it was a standard term for a black person in the 1800s, darky sounds kind of childish and doesn't fit with the tone of the song. The word soldier works much better.

I'm so sorry for your loss April. Losing anyone close to you like your papa Rick, will hurt for a long time, but over that time, the bad feeling fade and the good feelings stay strong. You stay strong too. (I love the song too)
