Mistake  I  made  about  15  years  ago.  She  wanted  to  stay  and  I  wanted  her  to sooooo  bad ,  but  did   not  let  her.  Allowed  her  to  go  home  with  her  girl friend. i'm pretty sure the song is about him messing up a relationship with an ex-girlfriend or maybe ex-wife and he is trying to make things right and he realizes how much he messed up. so maybe at the end the one thing he couldn't start was her love to him or something like that, but that is just a guess.
