Helen Reddy began performing at the age of four in her native Australia; by the early 60s she had her own television series. Between 1971 and 1978, Reddy hit the Top 40 fourteen times with her smooth, airy light-pop singles, including the number ones "Delta Dawn," "Angie Baby," and "I Am Woman." As her hits petered out toward the end of the '70s, her acting work increased, including roles in Pete's Dragon, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Airport 1975. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

To think that my high school class was the first to not require Home Economics to graduate from high school -- in the *1980s*.Then prior to this it took the early 1970s before we could even wear slacks to school (and it really did matter, as walking to school in those cute dresses when it was 10 degrees outside...I hate dresses to this day!).Just recently I was on a game forum that had a thread about women playing that space sim game. I mentioned the reasons why women would not be attracted to that game and gave some examples. Then some women came in claiming otherwise. I asked one, "How old are you?". The response is what is expected by kids, the usual about age doesn't have a factor on intelligence [you know it's kids when their focus is on *intelligence* and not wisdom, because they haven't acquired enough yet]. I explained that if you lived in a time when your high school class is the first that didn't have to take Home Economics, playing video games will not be the priority -- and it's true.We were shaped to the time period we were raised in and it's social mores. My classmates, even if they could afford an Apple or IBM PC, their interests would not be in computing itself. The closest we got to a computer were the first video games on consoles. But that was considered like dolls, play things and not a career itself. We were not told exactly what we would be, it was assumed though you will be a wife, and mother, and a support mechanism for your husband's career.I was lucky because my dad was unconventional, he allowed me to not *just* pursue the "womanly arts" but even science. He didn't object to me writing to Kitt Peak National Observatory at age 10 (object, because in those days they could, and many fathers did object to any activities that wasn't "women like") as I so wanted to be an Astronomer. He even got me books on topics of being a young scientist, even a subscription to New Scientist. I was allowed to play with Lincoln Logs, chemistry and Erector sets. Heck, he even got me the Invisible V-8 model kit to build, and first telescope. Also learned the construction trade from framing to laying concrete, as dad said we had to learn to be independent (which meant not relying on men to do everything for you). Was also blessed with those two huge Webster-Merriam unabridged dictionaries and a complete set of Encyclopedia Britannica with annuals to read. So I was indeed very lucky when the 1980s came and PCs to even START to video game in the first place. My classmates didn't have all that, they had more conventional lives and upbringing. When a kid grows up, even as blessed as I was, they then see the very realities in life that a person is not just judged by the color of their skin, but their gender. I had an employer in the 80s who referred to his employees still with the "N" word. Seen day-to-day sexism in just moving a sofa, where despite that you're there with two arms and hands -- no -- just wait until the guys come back deal (you know if you had to wait for men, at home, to move things for you NOTHING would get done???). My mom DID the work of grown men since she was even a child, back breaking manual farming (she had the strongest back I ever saw). Guys weren't going to save her to be more of a lady, she had to help feed her family. Until that very night of her death, she was still in her garden, not even heart surgery and other ailments kept her away, nothing stopped her but God!No one will e-v-e-r convince me that a woman can't get the job done via a lack of intelligence, wisdom and physical ability. If she wants to get something done *she will.**Hell NO to sexism!*(And YES, I remember those days as shown on the music clip, too! You don't want to return to them, either!)#womanrights #era #sexism

The United Nations declared 1975 the "Year of the Woman" and "I am Woman" its theme song. For those younger than us, be honoured! The 1970’s females surpassed more goals earned what we have. “I am Woman” will always be our theme song and those younger; it’s your legacy to carry on for your children! When Helen wrote these passionate lyrics, she had no idea what it would mean to my generation and those who came before us. Hold your head up high and continue the fight for it is not over...but we’re getting there. In 2013, she was age 72 and still going strong, her voice superb. Why? Because she is Woman!

I was 12-years-old when this was on broadcast television. I grew up in the age of Women's Liberation that was part of an ongoing movement towards social Civic Rights for ALL peoples and persons. Even today, as a grown up, middle-aged man, I feel empowered listening to Helen Reddy sing what became her signature recording. "I Am Woman" translates to me as "I Am Human", but then women have had to translate lots of male-oriented songs, etc, so that's rather fair. Thanks and best of luck to any female (and/or male) separatists. I actually rather like and have respect for nuns and monks. Have a great day!
