They were most likely ceremonial masks given to certain individuals to show off their rank or skill in the function they preformed in the Roman army (being a really good horseman for example).

Faceplates/masks have been found quite a bit in Europe in all kinds of styles and shapes. The one depicted on this album cover is a Batavian mask though. Most likely from a Batavian Auxiliary cavalryman.
