This song is a lamentation about the lack of free will and the fact that we are controlled by something as unpredictable as emotions. People have posted the simplified version of this, but I think this song deserves a little more. The line, "my brains the cliff and my hearts the bitter buffalo," essentially means that the bitter buffalo--the heart, the emotions--is the principle and sole actor ultimately making the decision to kill itself. The emotions are in control. The cliff--the brain, the intellect--merely provides the means (the plan: the manifestation of intellect) to carry out the suicide. It goes beyond just this one suicidal act as a metaphor for the forces guiding human action. The brain, the intellect, is only an instrument for the whims of the emotions. This ties into another line: "my brains the burger and my hearts the coal". This is a little more obvious and creates the overarching theme when taken into consideration with the elucidation of the first. The heart, the emotions, cook--influence--the brain and not the other way around. The heart is ultimately what drives us humans. This is an obvious reference to the title and probably the main theme of the song that Isaac had in mind when he wrote it (obviously all lyrics are subjective at the end of the day, let's not get into a pissing contest). The reason for all human action can be sourced to an emotional impulse. Emotion predicates logics. Heart cooks brain. Isaac mourns the melancholy truth that reason is not dictating the actions of his meat machine. Because of that, it is impossible to know where he'll end up. That is why he says, "on the way to god don't know." His logical component ultimately sees its secondary nature and that it is not "the driver". He laments this realization (and if you want to put idea into application, this lamentation is what caused him to fabricate the song: emotions influencing intellect, lamentation to intellectual creation, heart cooks brain...the intellect has some influence but it is mainly a tool of the heart) as the seemingly irrational aspect of him is controlling everything, and he can ultimately not know his fate. Judging by his melancholy, troubled delivery, he may not believe it will be anything positive, and he probably doesn't like the fact that sentient beings seemingly don't have much control after all. This song questions, and possibly outright refutes, the idea that we have free will. This theme dominates this song. There are probably references to history or something or other ideas in there as well, but most of the lyrics can be tied back to the idea that emotions control, or at the very least, heavily, heavily influence human action--that we do not seem to have free will and are subject to chemical interactions and their emotions in our heads.. Heart cooks brain.

"My brain's the cliff & my heart's the bitter buffalo" There's meaning to that. It was explained to me before (years ago) but I forgot.

This song reminds me of dreams I had while I was single. I will never be able to articulate them, but I had dreams about being alone living in NYC, it was a block that was very similar to the one I lived near in Lowell,Ma, however there was a feeling of isolation.
