Flashbacks 1920's - 1940's Novelty Songs Of An Era Long Gone Bye. Drug Songs.

Harry "The Hipster" Gibson (June 27, 1915 -- May 3, 1991) was a jazz pianist, singer, proto-rapper and songwriter.

Gibson played New York style Stride piano and boogie woogie while singing in a wild, unrestrained style. His music career began in the late 1920s, when as the young Harry Raab, his birth name, he played stride piano in Dixieland jazz bands in Harlem. He continued to perform there throughout the 1930s, adding the barrelhouse boogie of the time to his repertoire, and was discovered by Fats Waller in 1939 and brought down to mid-town Manhattan, where he made a splash and changed his surname to Gibson. Between 1939 and 1945, he played at various Manhattan jazz clubs on 52nd Street ("Swing Street"), most notably the Three Deuces, run by Irving Alexander, and Leon and Eddies, run by Leon Enkin and Eddie Davis.

Ovaltine is a brand of milk flavoring product made with malt extract (except the blue packaging in the US), sugar (except in Switzerland), cocoa, and whey. Ovaltine, a registered trademark of Associated British Foods, is made by Wander AG, a subsidiary of Twinings which acquired the brand from Novartis in 2003, except in the United States, where Nestlé acquired the rights separately from Novartis later on.

Ovomaltine was exported to Britain in 1909; it was a misspelling in the trademark registration that led to the name being shortened to Ovaltine in English-speaking markets. A factory was built in Kings Langley which exported to the United States as well. By 1915 Ovaltine was being manufactured in Villa Park, Illinois, for the US market. Originally advertised as consisting solely of "malt, milk, eggs, flavored with cocoa", the formulation has changed over the decades, and today several formulations are sold in different parts of the world. In the US, after purchasing the US rights, Nestlé changed the formulation bringing its flavor profile very close to that of another Nestlé chocolate milk flavoring product, Nesquik.

This delightful song is a spoof on a popular Irish-American novelty number, "Who Threw the Overalls in Mrs. Murphy's Chowder?"Younger people may not be aware that until the late 1960s, Benzedrine (speed) and other amphetamines were available over the counter-- no prescription needed and no questions asked. "Bennies" were popular as a weight-loss drug and as a general pick-me-up, especially with musicians and other hipsters.Ovaltine (basically, instant chocolate milk) was advertised as a drink that would help people get to sleep, since it was non-caffeinated. Obviously, if you put Benzedrine in it, it has the opposite effect.

Great song and fantastic title! What about USA today? You can buy potent drugs legally just around the corner, but the users are too knocked out to write good songs about it.

what i hear is the artistry, including jazz riffs from long ago and prototype(good word for it) rap of a bygone era that today's youth and oldsters like myself wouldn't normally associate with today's hiphop which is well over 30, nigh on 40 years old in it's present mainstream form. but, the information on benzedrine and other dope contained on these posts is informative, folks.
