De reden dat het derde couplet niet op de plaat staat is eigenlijk eenvoudig: op een10" 78 toerenplaat passen slechts 2 muziekstukken (een op de voorkant en een op de achterkant). De duur van een lied is dus beperkt tot circa 3 minuten per zijde. Later, met de komst van de LP verdween deze beperking, maar tot de dag van vandaag duren muzieknummers nog steeds rond de 3 minuten. Grotere muziekwerken (met name klassieke muziek) werden overigens op grotere 12" platen geperst.12 years ago

Dit lied kwam in 1929 tot stand toen de radioverbinding tussen Nederland (Radio Kootwijk) en Indonesië (Bandoeng) tot stand kwam. Vanaf toen was het mogelijk om familieleden over lange afstand via de radiogolf te spreken.12 years ago

Fantastic song, very dramatic, always makes me cry. My family lived in the Dutch Indies back then and usually when someone left for the colonies you would never see them again, the journey was just too expensive. I think about my family, the horrible things that happened to them during the war but also how they were separated from the Netherlands, friends and family. Even without all that baggage the song on its own is dramatic enough.13 years ago

@myrdalism The song is about an old lady in the Netherlands who speaks over the phone to her son in Bandung, and hears the voice of her grandchild for the first time. The song is from 1929, shortly after the first telephone connection between Europe and the East Indies/ Indonesia had been established. Another version which by now is probably better known than Derby's, was song by Wieteke van Dort (also known as her Indo alter ego "Tante Lien") in the 1970s .
