That was the cool thing about the mid 80s. You had a lot of bands that were rooted in punk that were making great sounding "post-punk." Back then, "death-rock" was still related to punk. Later, "goth" would become crap about ghosts and vampires. This is sort of my own personal take, I could be wrong about the timeline of the use of the word goth. A perfect example would be the Lords of the New Church, with members of the Damned and Dead Boys but transitioning from punk to death rock.
