Just think

ol genius Hoyt put his money where his mouth was about JFK in this beautiful song.  His signing it on the tonight show got him banded from ever appearing there again.

Saw Hoyt perform this song. He smiled; but it was a very sad smile. Thirty years later, my own smile is more like that. And I love this song.

My mom used to sing this song to me when I was little. I called it the "raccoon song", but for years I never knew who had written it originally. Then one day I heard the song coming down the hall and realized my parents had dug out the old vinyl. Finally, I got to hear it as originally recorded. This song just plays a chord in my heart I can't describe.

I once heard this sung at a gathering 'round the firelight on a starlit summer night in Bayfield, Wisconsin, by someone I had never met or ever saw again. It cut right through. Most everyone offered encouaging words in its wake. What an amazing little song. The passages about Kennedy and the rolling river stayed in my head. The wash of daily life cleansed the rest right out of me. I never knew its title, but I have longed to hear this song for more than thirty years. Thank you for posting it.
