To me this song sounds like it's about a loved one (maybe a first boyfriend) who committed suicide. It's definitely about a loved one. The title (It's A Wonderful Life - the movie about the man who wished he was never born) and the line "When did you get so lost, and how could you think you'd be better off?" makes me think the subject was depressed or going down the wrong path and decided he (I'm guessing it's a he, but I could be wrong) would be better off dead.

Love this song. I think this song is about John Spence, the first lead singer of No Doubt before Gwen came in. He committed suicide. Also I believe the title of the song also refers to the movie "It's A Wonderful Life" where Jimmy Stewart finds himself in trouble, and he thinks the only way to solve things is by committing suicide by jumping off a bridge. Gwen says it's a wonderful life, meaning it truly is wonderful and a blessing to be alive, and also the sadness the band mates went through when John had to "say goodbye". This song kinda helped me get through some rough times, and I just listened to it over and over, and thought things are not so bad. It's a wonderful, wonderful life. Love You Gwen!

A few things to say about this song. I'd like to start by saying this is the ultimate finale to Gwen's chapter in the music industry, at least for her work on her own. Once the Sweet Escape concluded, Gwen drifted away. So I think of Wonderful Life as the farewell finale song to Gwen's work. This was the last track of the last album she made. And to me, Wonderful Life along with Early Winter were the most sentimental and deep songs she sang, even if she didn't write Early Winter. 4 in the Morning is also a very deep song too but I don't think of it quite as dramatic as this one, Wonderful Life has a title that hints at being happy and joyful, but the song doesn't sound joyful, it sounds bittersweet. Maybe it's sarcastic. I feel like Wonderful Life is the one song that captures her album's cover art. All of the art for the album depicts a very serious Gwen showing hardly any happy emotions, she's even crying in one piece. I feel this song accompanies that teary eyed Gwen perfectly. It's interesting how she chose the cover art to accompany the album when the song that is named after the album is such an upbeat cheerful song yet the cover doesn't depict that, it's like the album is showing one thing and the song that defines the album is saying another thing. I associate Wonderful Life with the album's art.

This song haunts me!, taking my thoughts to my first husband who committed suicide. It's a devastating way to loose a love & learn a lesson! I'm asking why but I'll never know!
