The opening female vocal on this record is not Clare Torry , although she is one of the back-up vocalists, it is Kay Garner. It was recorded at Sarm East studio many years ago now !And indeed it was a " session singer " recording and a group had to be got together to promote the record, hence " Guys and Dolls "David Martin was the lead vocalist who was co-writer of the song.

I remember how just after G&D hit it big my Dad told me how the year before he had been contracted to build some kind of extension up at Martine Howerd's (parents) house in Elstree. He said she was a bit Yiddisher and very very nice; that she used to come down into the kitchen late mornings in a Japanese dressing gown and make tea for them all.I still believe him.

@QueensburyBradford Yep, thats definitely Clare Torry at the start, the voice hsa got the same orgasmic quality that she displayed on Floyds "Great Gig in the Sky"

who is singing the male lead vocal on this? it's not Grant. Or maybe it's one of those typical 70s instances of the original record being performed by session singers before the band was put together...?

I really love this song but there's a version with a nice instrumental bit right at the very end after the song "ends". It comes swooping back with a repeat of the intro and finally fades out - I have it on tape from the radio but I can't track it down anywhere else!

Saw them at the London Palladium in the '70's with my ex wife. I have fonder memories of the group than I do of her!!
