Marty Robbins was furious when Mitch Miller gave the song to Guy Mitchell even though Marty was doing quite well with it. To smooth things over, Miller told Marty to come up with a good pop-sounding song and he could come up to New York and record it with Ray Conniff leading the session. That's where "A White Sport Coat" came from.
