Too Late

Words by Sam Lewis, music by Victor Young

Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians

Vocal refrain by Kate Smith

Recorded December 8, 1931

Lombardo began his musical career in 1924 in his native London, Ontario; with brothers Lebert, Carmen and Victor, he formed a big dance band. Originally, Guy was a violinist, but he soon became the band's leader and conductor. The Royal Canadians' slogan was "The Sweetest Music This Side of Heaven" -- and by 1930, the group was America's top dance band.

Kate began making records in 1926; among her biggest hits were "Too Late" (1931), "The Woodpecker Song" (1940), "The White Cliffs of Dover" (1941), "Rose O'Day" (1941), "I Don't Want to Walk Without You" (1942), "There Goes That Song Again" (1944), "Seems Like Old Times" (1946), and "Now Is the Hour" (1947). Her theme song was "When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain", the lyrics of which she helped write. Her overweight figure was the occasional butt of derision from fellow performers and managers.

What a recording this is... One of Guy's finest, and one of Kate's finest. The two melt together to form a perfect sound. This is such a haunting refrain. Wow... Amazing. Beautiful post. :-)

@roybo1930 Thanks. This was one of my first postings and I think I could have improved the sound using some of my newer transfer techniques. It's also one of the first Lombardo records I acquired about 40 years ago.

@HarborGuy These two were very popular mainly from their radio exposure. I found an old radio editors poll published in 1932 that showed Kate Smith edging out Ruth Etting in popularity among female singers. Guy Lombardo and Ben Bernie were two most popular dance orchestras.

A classic. The band, the sultry world weary voice. And Carmens lead sax- The Lombardo's are on any desert island list I would make, from this era in particular.

Kate Smith had such a great voice. It seems nowadays people want to have a winey voice.

She was an amazing artist who started out great and easily changed with the times. In fact some of her greatest record sales were occuring near the end of her career. She was a woman of amazing energy and wide interests, an admitted "sports nut" and someone who loved people, good times and hard work. I don't think boredom and down time existed for her. She wore stardom lightly; she loved being just one of the crowd in real life.

@2reeler Thanks. This was one of the first 78s I acquired when I started collecting in the 1960s. Both Kate Smith and Guy Lombardo were still living then and both were still quite active. I was surprised that their paths crossed in the early 1930s and they produced this little gem. It has always been one of my favorites. I look forward to your posting of the Al Jarrett version.
