It's actually Carmen Lombardo singing on "So Rare". Kenny Gardner didn't join the band until 1940.

This is the first version i heard of this song. It was on a Reader's Digest release of songs--I can't even remember the theme--songs of the 40's? I still love this version best. To me it is the most romantic. I love the way he sings it--it is the right style for the arrangement--it is the style of the time. By the end I want to kick off my shoes and glide around the room with my sweetheart. Don Cherry sings well but it is a different style for a different time.

@CatsPjamas1 You're probably right. Gardner had a perfect voice for the orchestra; crisp, reliable, and pleasant. It would have been interesting to hear him if he had been allowed to "cut loose" on his vocals a bit but that wasn't Guy's style. On the other hand he made of a good living without having to do anything but sing with the orchestra (when Lombardo wanted him to) for decades.

@larrydonguy I don't think Kenny was with the orchestra until the early '40's but I might be wrong.

@fmazzar Sure but Dorsey's orchestra had 20 years to improve it. My guess is that Kenny Gardner wasn't with Guy yet but if was then he should have sung it, not Carmen. For an EXCELLENT vocal of this one, check out singing golfer Don Cherry's version.
