I think he's improved a lot in the last decade. He's amazing here of course, but in the last few years his tone, accuracy and individuality have all blossomed. The character of his playing here doesn't quite sound 'Guthrie-ish' yet; for that reason, very interesting clip!

people who are complaining about the sound forgot that it is coming through the audio recording device of a cheap camera

As to your earlier 'not exactly a Dragon' comment, being a 'Dragon' would be irrelevant, the difference between a 'Dragon' and a regular PRS is purely decorative. All American PRS guitars are of the same quality. There are differences in pups, # of frets, wood, etc between models, but that is true for any manufacturer. Differences between a Cu24 & a Dragon at the time of this vid are; Cu24 has more 'modern' sounding pups and has 24 frets as opposed to 22. Cu22 is a Dragon without the inlays.

I agree that his playing here is "occasionally lazy". You may not like the tone, that is a purely subjective. IMO, his sound here is superior to other vids; warm, fat, dark and smooth. That works best for me, so YES to your question.

It is definitely NOT an SE, it is a Cu24. It has 24 frets, the SE Cu24 didn't exist when this vid was made. It has a carved top which the SE custom didn't have at the time. You can see that there is a mild flame on the top and that the neck heel is painted, which means it is a Cu24. This is a first-rate, American made guitar.

Mediocre instrument? It's a Paul Reed Smith. Having owned Fenders, Gibsons, Gretsch, Dean, Ibanez, on and on... NOTHING I have ever played can touch the least of the PRS guitars I own

yes, it's a PRS. I think he should go back to PRS since that is where is best tone was, including the new Charvel

Just took a closer look, might actually be a PRS which means it's of high quality anyway.

Dude, Guthrie is playing a Vigier here. Vigier's guitars are all custom built in France, as far as I'm concerned. They have a beautiful sound in my opinion and many extremely good guitarists play them. They're most common in the fusion genre. This is at least as good as a custom shop Stratocaster and the price is approximately the same, depending on certain specs, etc., obviously.

You are wrong his guitar and tone are amazing.I can understand though why you don't cause i also used to not like his tone cause it didn't' have the classic distortion and the sustain that comes with that distortion. This makes his skills even better, since anyone can cover some weaknesses with distortion but with gutrhie gear what you play is what you get.

@theblindsniper I just noticed, this is PRE-Suhr guitar endorsement though I don't necessarily care about what he plays WITH, I just love what he plays. :)

@Carthsgtr Never in my life have I heard of a Suhr guitar being called mediocre or Cornford amps not producing a great tone though I do know what you mean. I think at some point, it has to do with player preference and what they seem to find pleasing to the ear rather than the attempt to create an awesome tone to please everyone :p
