That last bit of advice he gives is great for learning how to improvise over jazz tunes all across the neck.

Spot on. Hendrix's style was essentially playing rhythm guitar in a lead sort of manner. Those 2 & 3 note voicings or embellishments on major chord shapes became his signature sound. He was a soul player with a funky feel. Guthrie's example at 1:34 is a textbook page out of Jimi's book :)

David Evans, how complex did DaVinci paint? It's not only speed that makes shredders superior to some dead folk guitarist. Your comparison though is illogical, as it's a false analogy.......how fast did Rachmaninoff or Vivaldi play? Check, and mate.

What all the shredders and wankers seem to miss about Hendrix is that he was not a guitarist. He was a writer and creator of universes. His guitar playing was secondary to that, in spite of his innovation. His innovation served his writing. His style of playing helped him create. All great artists focus on the creation itself, not on the tools used in making the creation. The tools, and therefore the skill with the tools, are a very distant second to the creation. Modern guitar players are unique in history as being the only ones so obsessed with how they look, if they're cool and how fast and complicated they can play that they rarely understand what music is. When you can play like Guthrie yet are perfectly content to play the opening fingerpicking chords to "Brain Damage" by Pink Floyd, you'll enter the league of great artists like Hendrix. If you try and it takes everything you've got to retrain yourself from wanking, you suck. If you can't restrain yourself, there is no hope for you. Playing guitar will never be your occupation. How fast did DaVinci paint? Exactly.

Despite the fact that I worship Hendrix and like Govan, Hendrix was not the first one to mix rhythm and melody... decades before him people like Django, or much earlier some unknown flamenco players, were doing that. Let's say that Hendrix made that playing style very famous for rock audiences and for the masses.
