I'm hoping this was explained in the comments and I just didn't read far enough (or else I will feel terribly old). This song isn't about what Heaven is like, nor is about materialism in Heaven. It was written after his son died. It is about meeting his son in Heaven, wanting to be with him, but knowing it isn't his time to die yet.
