The song was written for John's young son Julian, who was upset because his parents were divorcing. Paul originally wrote it as "Hey, Jules," but changed it to "Jude" because the hard consonant at the end just sounded better.

Good question. Sorry it took me so long to reply - I don't get on here much these days. But, the story goes that the principal songwriter and singer of this tune [Paul McCartney] was penning it as a tribute (and words of comfort) to John Lennon's son, Julian. Was written at the time John was divorcing Cynthia [Julian's mom] in order to be with Yoko. Paul felt that 'Julian' and 'Jules' didn't work for the tune (he tried both) so he went to 'Jude'. Hope that helps shed light. Best wishes.

That's exactly right. He switched it because he thought it "sounded a bit better".

Thanks! I'd always wondered about that.

Twas written originally for Julian Lennon. It first read 'Hey Jules', but 'Jude' sounded better, I suppose.

I've always wondered why he picked the name "Jude." Any thoughts?

Yet another Gregorian Beatles upload with the wrong album pictured. This album uses straight Gregorian with no drumbeat (just medieval plainchant) and does not have the song "Hey Jude". This is I believe from the album by Ausultate (spelling?)
