This song was originally recorded in 1937 on Melotone 78 records, and was re-issued in 1968 on this Columbia product, Harmony LP record# 11289 titled: "Great Speckle Bird"...Roy Acuff & his "Smoky Mountain Boys".

Transferred to digital using stereo gear on background photo.

Are you thinking of "the wild side of life" by hank thompson? It has the line, "I didn't know God made honky tonk angels." The Kitty Wells song was a responce to this. Rod Stewart did a cover of the song in the '70's for the rock'n'rollers. .

"Great Speckle Bird" (Vocalion 4252) entered the pop charts with week of September 24, 1938 and peaked at #13 over a three week chart run. It did not chart country because there were no country charts then. Two years later there were. Interesting how similiar this song is, from a structual standpoint, to the later "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels." .
