From the 1982 album "Shadows". By the 1980s Gordon Lightfoot was not as relevant as he had been in the 60s and 70s, and he was changing his sound from folk-rock to more of an adult contemporary feel. This album did not sell well, but "Baby Step Back" did reach the Top 20 of the Adult Contemporary charts and is probably the best track on the album.

It is the type of song that could hvae been played in a small-town Canadian strip joint in the 1980s, as some "French table dancer" was busy working.

This song should have been a # 1 song at least on the AC charts, perhaps the top 100 and Billboard country singles charts back in 1981.

Good track but the best on the album for me is the title song. Hell, I'll take "14 Karat Gold" and "Heaven Help the Devil" over this one.

I thought it had at least Top 5 written all over it since it was nearly as good as Sundown & it still befuddles me to this day!

I disagree that Lightfoot was less "relevant" in the 80's than earlier. His hits were flukes of class and art in a music world dominated by trash aimed at the lowest common denominator - as is the case today. GL's music has always been carefully crafted word pictures with economy of words, emotional depth and nuanced instrumentation. The masses cannot hold still long enough to appreciate such treasures. I, for one, admire his consistant quality and perception.

This album is still selling @ amazon.com and is considered by many to be as good, if not better than Sundown. Like Sundown, there is not one bad track. I like Baby Step Back, but my favorite is the title song "Shadows". Can't get more romantic. Gordon Lightfoot has been #1 in my music world since I 1st heard him back in '73. I've been to at least 10 concerts over the years. Last saw him May 2012 with some friends who equally appreciate him. It was a magical night.
