Glenn Miller vs Tommy Dorsey, who had the better rendition in the early 1940s? Both of them are great, but which one is better?

This song will always remind me of my grandparents. It was their favorite song. At my grandfather's wake, we put this song on the slideshow, to pictures of him and my grandmother who had already passed away. Everybody was hysterically crying. The whole summer of 2009 (the year he passed) I played it and it takes me back to that summer. I loved listening to this type of music while riding in the car with my grandpa, especially in the summers. We had a family cottage on a lake out in the country 45 minutes west of us. Being in the car with him driving there, listening to that music and leaving all my troubles and idiots I had to deal with at school for 9 months, far behind, for a short time, was just pure bliss. I still go to that lake to visit a friend who lives there, and play the old music on an AM station, but it's just not the same. I agree we need more of that music played at school dances and wedding receptions. My parents got married in 1981 and they had a little 3 piece band that played all the old classics. Even in 1981, that seemed kind of out of date for a wedding but I would take that over today's crap any day.

One piece of trivia I love about this song. If you listen to the Mercury Theatre War Of The Worlds, during the initial news broadcast segments, they cut away to this piece several times before the invasion storyline takes over.

Christopher Haines: it's even better than that! Your soul is truly young and free--that's your only trouble, lol. Miller, and arrangers like Finnegan, wrote and recorded this music for young people like you and me. Most people our age have minds that, as you say, are weighed down by filthy rap and pop music of today. They are the ones who have been made old, in my opinion. I'm glad to see more of us are becoming liberated, and opening our eyes, and breathing fresh musical air!

I heartily endorse the comment of Christopher Haines (below). This kind of music was one of the things that bound our nation together and helped us defeat two major enemies and win the most sever war the world had ever known. I was assigned to a station in Oklahoma in July of 1942. In September I met the girl of my dreams who I dated until February the following year when I married that pretty little thing. All during our courtship, Glenn Miller's Stardust was our favorite song.Said to say, after 70 years together I lost her last March but Stardust and all the good music of that era are still very dear to me.The country needs this kind of stimulus today as never before.

I think the only musical group that has not recorded STARDUST is CCR

I'm proud to be an old man trapped inside a teenager's body! We need more of this played at school dances, wedding receptions, and so forth. I listen to this song, close my eyes, and just let the old soul out :) Of course I listen to dubstep as well, but I appreciate the works of Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Isham Jones, and the Ink Spots far more! Glenn Miller, you have one new fan, a 17-year old kid who would much rather listen to your works than that filthy rap and pop music of today!
