Giuseppe di Stefano (24 July 1921 -- 3 March 2008) was an Italian operatic tenor whose career spanned from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. He was also known for his long association with Maria Callas, with whom he performed and recorded many times, and with whom he was briefly romantically involved.

It is the opionion of many that di Stefano had perhaps the most beautiful natural voice of any tenor in recorded history. Of course he is also infamous for his regression in his technique; his consistent heavy pushing through the passaggio and beyond caused him to lose most of his vocal beauty by the late 60-early 70s.

He sings here a rendition of 'Che gelida manina' from La Boheme. A well known 1950s studio recording. The voice is still beautiful here.

Di Stefano's Che gelidas are the most satisfying renditions to my ears. In my opinion, he does even better Che gelidas in live performances.

Rest in peace, Maestro.

Grande Pippo

His voice is so pure; kind of angelic if it's ok to use that qualifier. I don't know how else to describe it. I've been listening to this recording several times now. Wonderful.

Even Pavarotti, the greatest tenor of the last 40 years struggled to reach the top notes during the last few years of his life.Stefano was a very special tenor, one ofhe greatest of all time.

I'm surprised this comment received so many negative votes, it's all true! only thing i would add is that he had almost unrivalled beauty in his time. you can see early in his career that he did cover but decided to sing differently. he did lose his high notes, or at least their reliablity towards the end of the career. Had he covered would be be so well remembered 50 years on? i think not.

Anyone who can remain unmoved by singing of this calibre is not musical.
