I was thinking that night about ElvisDay that he died, day that he diedI was thinking that night about ElvisDay that he died, day that he diedJust a country boy that combed his hairAnd put on a shirt his mother made and went on the airAnd he shook it like a chorus girlAnd he shook it like a Harlem QueenHe shook it like a midnight rambler, babyLike you never seen, like you never seen, never seenI was thinking that night about ElvisDay that he died, day that he diedI was thinking that night about ElvisDay that he died, day that he diedHow he took it all out of black and whiteGrabbed his wand in the other hand and he held on tightAnd he shook it like a hurricaneHe shook it like to make it breakAnd he shook it like a holy roller, babyWith his soul at stake, with his soul at stake, soul at stakeI was thinking that night about ElvisDay that he died, day that he diedI was thinking that night about ElvisDay that he died, day that he diedHe was all alone in a long declineThinking how happy John Henry was that he fell down and diedWhen he shook it and he rang like silverHe shook it and he shine like goldHe shook it and he beat that steam drill, babyWell bless my soul, well bless my soulHe shook it and he beat that steam drill, babyWell bless my soul, what's wrong with me?I was thinking that night about ElvisDay that he died, day that he diedI was thinking that night about ElvisDay that he died, day that he diedJust a country boy that combed his hairPut on a shirt his mother made and he went on the airAnd he shook it like a chorus girlHe shook it like a Harlem QueenHe shook it like a midnight rambler, babyLike he never seen, never seen, like he never seen, never seen

This qualifies as a cheerful upbeat Gillian Welch song. I wonder if she's ever tempted to throw in 'like a polaroid picture'. But that's not the point. The point is how shatteringly effective his dissonant harmonies are. Putting on a shirt should never be this sad.
