From Gilbert`s great 1977 album SOUTHPAW , and also released as a single . From the first time I heard this song it reminded me of my own part of the world , Nottinghamshire in England where mining communities existed everywhere when I was growing up - not so anymore . It was lines like " We used to meet after work - me all covered in dirt and you with you hair all scattered ... " that I identified with . It was probably similar where Gilbert was brought up in Swindon and he may have had similar images in his mind when he wrote this song .....

This song paints such a vivid scene of love, pure and unspoiled, innocent and inspiring, enjoyed and missed with regret. It's pure magic with the wonderful voice of Uncle Ray and brilliant arrangement and musical backing. It is my favourite of his. Thank you so much for presenting this video.14 years ago

@212wakka Thanks. I can remember when this came out as a single here in the UK back in 1977 - it was getting loads of airplay on BBC Radio 2 at the time and I went out and bought it ( I think it was before the album came out ) . I could never understand why it wasn`t a big hit . I suppose in `77 all the `punk` music was taking off which didn`t help. The annoying thing is I had a VHS Video of him singing this LIVE on a TV show - but I lost it ! I wish I still had it now !15 years ago

@CHITTYCHITTYBUNGBUNG Yes you`re right - it would be great to hear this performed again. He did a tour to promote this album back in 1978 and he may have sung it then, but to my knowledge he hasn`t done it since. It is a very under-rated song, I love it .15 years ago

I agree Barry - it`s a great song . As for this video , I was thinking about all the different nationalities that have subscribed to this channel - fans from Japan , America, Spain, Australia and many others , most of which will have very little knowledge of " working class Britain " - something so familiar to me and yet so alien to them. So hopefully these images will give them just a small insight into the world Gilbert was thinking of when he wrote songs like this and " We Will " .15 years ago

It definatley gets 5/5 from me - it couldn`t be any better ! I think it`s a very English song and arrangment , maybe you have to be from the same type of background to fully appreciate it .15 years ago
