This is the later `Definitive Version` from 1995 of one of Gilbert`s early songs written in 1968 after the tragic death of Robert Kennedy , the popular young Senator well on his way to becoming the President of the United States of America . He was assassinated at the age of 42 . There are a few videos of Gilbert singing this song - but this video is a flash-back in US History to
remind us WHY he wrote the song .....
Here`s a quote from Gilbert from 1972 - "I don't know how many people realise "I Wish I Could Cry" was about Bobby Kennedy. If you listen to the lyrics again with that knowledge, the words will mean a lot more. I did it in a subtle way. "I don't mention his name once. I didn't say, 'Bobby Kennedy's dead. It's awful. What are we gonna do? Why did they kill him?' I just wrote the song: 'Day by day, someone we really love seems to feel the pain we're always thinking of. And, you know, if only we were the men we're supposed to be, it wouldn't happen again.' Now I mean, if you didn't know that was about Bobby Kennedy, you'd never guess. You'd just think it was quite a sad song."

I never thought much of this song - but the original version (especially the 1971 mix with the rhythm section) is better, in that the "why do they do these things" outro at least distracts a little attention from the (lyrical) inarticulacy and (musical) gracelessness of the rest!Appreciating Gilbert doesn't mean not criticizing him (where criticism is due) - I know some people didn't appreciate me doing that on the fansite, that's why I don't visit it anymore.12 years ago

I was in 8th grade and I remember coming home from a school field trip that terrible day. I found my sister crying in front of the tv. We both sat and watched all the news coverage. thank you for making this wonderful tribute with Gilbert's beautiful song!!14 years ago

@gentle431 Thanks Jen. I was only a kid when Bobby died so I don`t have any real memories of it at the time. I know he was much loved so I suppose the reaction in America must have been similar to what happened here in the UK when we lost Princess Diana so tragically. You always remember exactly where you were when you heard the news .14 years ago

@RAYalized Thanks Nicole - we should remember these people. You know which picture touched me the most ? It`s the one of Bobby running on the beach with his dog behind him , totally unaware of his fate . That one really got to me .14 years ago

@Bluelady50 Thanks Jo . As Gilbert said there`s nothing lyrically to suggest the connection with Bobby . I was suprised how moving this turned out to be. I knew why he wrote it , but the song and the story were still kind of seperate entities. But put the pictures and the music together and it really hits home . Yes - his brother John ( JFK ) died the same way in 1963 . What unbelievable grief that family had to endure and who knows how different America may have been if they had both lived .14 years ago
