For those who may not know , ` Gordon Bennett ! ` is a term of American origin that is used as an expression of shock or surprise - like `Good Lord ! ` Gordon Bennett did exist , his father James Gordon Bennett ( senior ) was the founder of the ` New York Herald ` newspaper. James Gordon Bennett ( junior ) - just known as `Gordon `- was also a famous journalist and newspaper editor . Like newspaper editors today, he loved creating big scandalous headlines for his papers. He was also an extremely controversial character himself , with incredible stories about his womanising etc. Over many years , shocking events became linked with the name ` Gordon Bennett`. Being a great sports fan he used his wealth to sponsor many events, such as Aeroplane , Balloon and Car races - some still continuing today as this video shows. This song - from the 1989 album IN THE KEY OF G - is NOT about Gordon Bennett - but it is inspired by the `expression of surprise ` that is still used today . I hope this video helps to explain just who this person was !

@55555jgn Ok Hans - I hope you understood the explanation ! My favourite line in the song - " What`s the point of saying you have lost your shoes when you can`t find your feet ? " - Great lyric !

@RAYalized Thanks Nicole . You wouldn`t believe some of the things I read about old Gordon ! If he was around today he would never be out of the papers himself !! Maybe it was that amazing moustache that attracted the ladies ( very impressive ) - or it could have been his money ! If it`s the moustache - I`m growing one ! lol Gordon Bennett !!!!

@RWillemM Thanks Rob. Last year at the Albert Hall in London he mentioned this song on stage but he didn`t sing it . He said it amuses him to sometimes use things like this that he knows many people won`t understand ! He also spoke of the line in MAKE MY DAY where he says " When your`e only love`s gone for a Burton ! " Not many people will understand that either !

@raynard501 Thanks . It`s a difficult song to illustrate so I thought I would concentate on explaining the Gordon Bennett link . To be honest I was suprised to find it comes from America - I always thought it was just a British saying , like ` cockney ` or something . But Bennet was known worldwide for the sporting connections so that must be how it got to Britain. Is it used in America , Ireland etc ? Would love to know !

This is facinating stuff - thanks mohawk . I`ve always liked this song by Gilbert since I found this album a few years ago but never quite understood the `Gordon Bennett ` thing - but I have often heard it said . Clever of Gilbert to weave a song around a simple phrase like that . You learn something every day ! lol
