This is actually Eddie Kendricks singing (the Temptation who originally led this song). He, Dennis, and their group (including Nate Evans, David Sea, and Damon Harris) made an album of re-recorded Temptations hits right before Eddie's passing and this track was on the album. As you can hear, Eddie was suffering from lung cancer and wasn't able to sing as strongly as he could in his younger years.
