"Horse To The Water" by George Harrison and Jools Holland from album Small World Big Band (2001).

George and his son Dhani wrote and recorded tracks for this to contribute to George's friend Jools Holland's "Big Band Rock" project just months before George's death from cancer. The lyrics partially reflect George's own stubbornness in not quitting smoking despite the medical evidence that it causes the disease, and relates this to other people who ignore warnings, enlightenment and plain common sense.

George recorded his vocals and guitar tracks in Switzerland while Holland would later overdub the "big band" and chorus in his studio in England.

This song is pretty much George admitting that he never listened when people told him to stop smoking. Recorded in early October 2001, George only had another month to live.

I have two observations. 1. sure he wrote this about himself and 2. I think the Tom Petty connection described below is backwards. This is pure Harrison. I'm inclined to think maybe Tom Petty walked away from The Wilburys with a strong Harrison influence. Of course this is just my observation.

Said to be the last track George Harrison ever recorded. With the incomparable Jools Holland. George Harrison - Horse To The Water

Poor George. He struggled with music in a way the others did not. In spite of his 2 or 3 hits, George's clunky style could never overcome the general feeling he was not in the same class as John and Paul. George's music as well as his "hippie" thing proved to be mostly posturing. Then, the guy that preached that we should take care of the planet and our bodies...literally SMOKED HIMSELF TO DEATH!

Sam Brown's rendition of this song is stupendous and out of this world. I'm not trolling (this time), but this rendition of the song is very average... it's not one of George's big hits. If it wasn't George singing, we wouldn't even be listening to it. I'm only saying this to observe with fascination how an otherwise average song can be built up as it was in Concert For George into a grand slam.

This should have been George's big last hit. But that's probably the man for you, very generous of him. Of course I never knew him personally, just guessing....sitting here, living in the material world....
