What a wonderful song ! The lyrics are perfect and i think should be mandatory for our children. The message is clear and true. We should not ignore old people but rather listen to their stories, their experiences and enrich our lives!

I went back home to Scotland in 1968 from homesickness but I took George's album Canadian Pacific with me and I swear listening to that album brought me back here. then back in the early seventies I had a drink with George in the Horseshoe Tavern on Queen St. Toronto, that was definitely a highlight in my life.

I remember listening to this song in my garage in 1972 or 1973. I would hit the heavy bag training for the NYC Golden Gloves. When this song came on the radio I would stop and listen to the words. I was only 18 years old. Now I'm almost 60 years old and I still have the same reaction. It was a great song then, it's a great song now.

Fabulous song, one of MANY that this great talent recorded duringhis long and fruitful career! George was among the first artiststo bridge the gap between Country and Pop, and left an importantand lasting legacy in music! RIP Sir, you were a true class act!!

At CFBV Smithers, back in AD 1969/1970/71, while I was doing the DJ thing, I played this tune as often as they would let me. If you also enjoy IV's Williams Lake Stampede, search for the Originator here at youtube: Alan Moberg. His later version is very well done. Cheers, KD.

Me too ... well almost. I'm 51 now. But I remember this song so well. I didn't care about it way back when; I see its truths now. Sad and still profound.

The melody has haunted me for at least 40 years. Last time I heard this I was just a kid shooting pool at the local hall.

Good to hear this song here. I knew the fellow who wrote it back in junior high school in Thorsby Alberta, Canada. Talented guy who loved music and made his living as a dentist.
