GBS from their studio album, "Play", released in 1997. I love this song, what can I say. I have many versions from many groups...and I love them all. Enjoy!

Great Big Sea Lyrics for General Taylor:

Well General Taylor gained the day,

Walk'em along John carry him along,

Well General Taylor gained the day,

carry him to his burying ground.

Chorus:

Tell me where is Stormy,

Walk'em along John carry him along,

Tell me where is Stormy,

Carry him to his burying ground.

We'll dig his grave with a silver spade,

Walk'em along John carry him along.

His shroud of the finest silk will be made,

Carry him to his burying ground.

(Chorus)

We'll lower him down on a golden chain,

Walk'em along John carry him along.

On every inch we'll carve his name,

Carry him to his burying ground.

(Chorus)

General Taylor he's all the go,

Walk'em along John carry him along.

He's gone where the stormy winds won't blow,

Carry him to his burying ground.

(Chorus)

General Taylor he's dead and he's gone,

Walk'em along John carry him along.

Well,General Taylor he's long dead and gone,

Carry him to his burying ground.(Chorus-repeat)

Allan has such an amazing voice! I'm fourteen and I love Great Big Sea, though I can't find any other kids my age who like bands like this. It's really a shame that my generation has been brainwashed by all the crappy pop music that's made these days...

Rest in peace Admiral Taylor. You deserved better than a shitty sidequest and a non-transmoggable two-hander.

I like Clam Chowder's version better. I understand why professional singers like to slow down the tempo and milk the chords, but that's NOT how a chantey is supposed to be sung. General Taylor is a capstan chantey, and there's a certain 'stomp, stomp' rhythm and tempo you need walking the capstan around. The same with line-haul chanteys- you have to sing them like you're actually hauling a rope 'pull, pause, pull, pause' while you sing it.

Can't get enough of this song and river driver as well as captain Kidd. GBS is a fantastic group it's a shame they didn't get a bigger following

it's more of a shanty style, look up "Barret's Privateers" by Stan Rogers, it has harmonies and 4 vocals but its in no way a Barbershop Quartet :P

I wish I had known this song when my grandfather died, it would have been a perfect send off

Hey, I didn't think of that! Yes, the harmonies are there. It's just with a Celtic/Newfie 'flare'. Thanks for making me smile. Love your comment, Moppet (Barbara)

Hi. I forgot your comment. I will look. I collect General Taylors and am finding some more songs. This week I found Emmylou Harris and more Hoyt Axton. I will keep my eyes out. I have at least 3 other versions that are great from other groups. My best to you, Moppet (Barbara)

Yes, and here's to another 15 or 20 years of their great music! (some groups I like just hit 45 years & still are fresh and great!). I love this version. I love GBS. I agree with you, though there are lots of great bands up there! Thanks for commenting, I appreciate it very much, Moppet
