LOL...I NEVER heard that song sang that fast before.  He still has that beautiful amazing voice though.

Stick to crying, Gene. This is almost cringe worthy.

without the Spector production this can never beat the Crystals despite of who wrote it and maybe not the singing too although I always loved both

I just listened to another girl group singing this song which reminded me that Gene Pitney wrote it. I've heard him sing it quite a few times and this video just reminded me how much energy he brings to the song, compared to the traditional girl group versions. Awesome.

Marianne Faithful had two things to say about him in her autobiography: he took his music and composing too seriously, and he was a great lay!  Maybe he DID "Love [His] Life Away!"

he's not a rebel - no, no, no - to me....

He's trying to ask what "format" means (not "wants to say"), but I don't get it either. If he hadn't translated it into French, I wouldn't have even known that much.

Did he record this song back in the day? It's the first time I heard Gene sing his song and it sounds strange. Darlene Love sings it the best. I heard Darlene sing it live during her, Portrait of a Singer tour, in 1992 at The Bottom Line 1992.

Along with Del and Roy, Gene was one of the 3 great male solo artists of the 60's. Interesting that all 3 continued to have hits in the UK in the years following the British Invasion while not being as successful here. All died way too young.

This was actually written as a gee up to Jewish leaders everywhere and was entitled "He's a Rabbi" ! Believe it or not. Well, don't then.

@lazur1 it was that eccentricity in his lyrics and singing that made him so special. He wasnt afraid to speak his mind wether it was belting out a great note or making a rythm with some of his unique vocals. It sounds like he puts so much emphasis and feeling into every line he delivers. Im Glad too share the same birthday with this man 17th of Feb. Its the dawning of the age of Aquarius!

@w:Gene (live) was an imperfect singer, as far back as '64. It seemed to me he'd risk going off or cracking his voice rather than miss a chance to nail something incredible, (which he also often did!). In the case of 'Rebel', it's more than that, & more than age: It's a song he didn't write for himself, that isn't suited for him, with a lame band, & being compared to a 'force of nature' recording by Darlene Love that no one can ever equal.

@Ze18613 He's trying to ask you, "Do you know what a format MEANS. Make a small effort and think of others." I figured it out from his French which is much better than his English. Other than that, I don't know what he's talking about, either.
