Black ships were some of the first Western vessels used for trade with Japan in the 16th century. Japan was isolated due to civil unrest, and these ships essentially helped to end that isolation.With that in mind, I've always interpreted this song as reaching out to someone who is very guarded. Even if you "build a black ship," that is, attempt to make a connection with someone, it's not always a fruitful endeavor and can become tangled with personal feelings and emotions that will keep a wall between two people. Perhaps one person had been spurned by a past lover, and therefore finds it difficult to connect with people after that event?I dunno, haha. I could be very, very wrong - but that's just my two cents!
