Before Jesus was crucified, he prayed to his Father (God) asking if the cup could be taken from him. In other words, he was basically praying that God would take the burden (taking on the sins of the world) would be taken off of his shoulders. Obviously, it was not, and our sins were forgiven! But when we pray for God to "take the cup," it usually means to provide deliverance in one way or another. I hope this made sense.
