From what I understand, they were to be signed by a major record label, and they then signed Nirvana instead of GC and thus ushered in the grunge rock era, in which GC didn't fit. So they got screwed on 2 counts, really, and some of that resentment can be seen in some of their subsequent music.11 years ago

@Catjoe12 Because they fell between two stools imo. Too metal for alt rock fans, too alt for metal fans(of the time), and they were on an indie label by the time 'Machine Fish' was released, so there was no real marketing push behind them. I also think they had a bit of a quality control problem. One album would be great, and the next would be average.12 years ago
