Like most people, I have a hard time listening to some bands outside of a particular circumstance, even if I like them. If I'm trying to chill out, Guttural Secrete is the last thing I want to hear, but if I wanna get pumped up you better believe Paul Simon isn't up to the task. Gaia Epicus is special because they have a wider range than most, while still excelling at being epic as hell.
Gaia Epicus is a power metal band that takes a bit more NWOBHM influence than usual, though not enough to mark it out from the herd. Think a sleeker version of early Blind Guardian, rougher around the edges than usual for the genre but still pretty tame. They're fast, energetic, and evocative, even if they only evoke the same epic fantasy imagery ubiquitous to the genre. They do avoid the campy aspects of it better than most, and they're less flowery than usual (90% of that because it avoids the dreaded synthesizeritis). As with Gory Blister, a better gateway band than most, and distinct enough that it doesn't feel derivative or bland. There aren't many situations where I would find Gaia Epicus an unwelcome intrusion, which is a pretty useful trait IMO.
Also, I can add from personal experience that this album makes fantastic workout music, although most other metal does too.
