This is the unreleased version of Fiona Apple's "O' Sailor" (produced by Jon Brion).

Lyrics:

I'm undecided about you again

Mightn't be right that you're not here

It's double sided 'cause I ruined it all

But also saved myself

by never believing you dear

Everything good I deem too good to be true

Everything else is just a bore

Everything I have to look forward to

Has a pretty painful and very imposing before

Oh sailor why'd you do it

What'd you do that for

Saying there's nothing to it

Then lettin' it go by the boards

Oh sailor why'd you do it

What'd you do that for

Saying there's nothing to it

Then lettin' it go by the boards

I have too been playing with fifty-two cards

Just 'cause I play so far from my vest

Whatever I've got, I've got no reason to guard

What could I do but spend my best

Oh sailor why'd you do it

What'd you do that for

Saying there's nothing to it

Then lettin' it go by the boards

Oh sailor why'd you do it

What'd you do that for

Saying there's nothing to it

Then lettin' it go by the boards

And after waiting, fighting patiently on my knees

All the other stuff tired itself out first, not me

And in its wake appeared the touch and call of a different breed

One of the steps is getting wise and got me there and then got me

And what a thing to know what could be instead

Oh what a blessed curse to see

Took the agenda from its place in my bed

Made a merry paramour of me

Oh sailor why'd you do it

What'd you do that for

Saying there's nothing to it

Then lettin' it go by the boards

Oh sailor why'd you do it

What'd you do that for

Saying there's nothing to it

As it goes by the boards

Oh sailor why'd you do it

What'd you do that for

Saying there's nothing to it

Then lettin' it go by the boards

Oh sailor why'd you do it

What'd you do that for

Saying there's nothing to it

Then lettin' it go by the boards

Oh sailor why'd you do it

What'd you do that for

Saying there's nothing to it

As it goes by the boards

Oh sailor why'd you do it

What'd you do that for

Saying there's nothing to it

As it goes by the boards

I really prefer this version, even though I like everything she sings. I already discovered my feminine targets in music and literature: Fiona Apple and Sylvia Plath.

I like certain things about each version, but I wish they could somehow combine the two together. I like the tempo, the vibes, and the child-like backing vocals from the released version, and I like the ending in this one. Honestly, as a whole I didn't like this album too much because both versions were too showtune-y for me. :/

I love both versions to be honest. I do agree with the fact that this one sounds a bit more melancholic than the other one.

Fiona Apple is the best.....everything else is just a bore.

Everyones bashing both the versions.. i think theyre enjoyable in different ways. Unreleased is more raw and not really edited with all those techno effects. But either way fiona writes a damn god song. And im sure she wouldnt let her fans her anything but what she thinks is her best.

erm as far as these dry clunky unreleased versions....glad Fiona decided to get a dif producer -the released exquisitely colored Extraordinary Machine is.. well, extraordinary.

SONY DID NOT MAKE HER REDO THE ALBUM. Fiona Apple decided to rerecord it because she felt it didn't fit

i totally agree with you see these people dont get that shes says that she loved the versions but she said that they didnt have the right heart beat they should . so she wanted to redo them. (: simple "The Making of Extraordinary Machine" (interview) jsut goo look at that it will explain all!

she might have liked them one way, but it's ok for her fans to like them a different way.

I forgot how absolutely breathtaking, haunting this version of the song is, especially the soaring, gorgeously heartbreaking string arrangement in the outro starting at 5:30.

fiona is great on her own, but with jon brion she's unstoppable.

are you drunk guys?:O the final version is so much better, the choir at the end (that this version misses) totally makes the song

@zachariot it depends on how you interpret the lyrics. i always thought she was referring to the love/hate relationship with her label especially the 'going by the boards' reference, and it's like her lament of the whole situation about having her album being shelved...i dunno, to me it's not so much about love and abandoned, as it is her view on the music industry and her place in it :)

The only complaint I have with this version is that the music drowns out her voice in the end (around 5:16). But that could've been a style choice.

DAMN, this version is soooooo much better than the released version...FIONA.....................the next time you do an album, let us fans decide which version to put on it. But honestly, i dont care what Fiona makes, Im just addicted to her, lol. Love you Fiona;)
