The song is actually called An Mhaighdean Mhara and it's in the Irish language (Gaelic). It's a classic old song from Donegal (in northwest Ireland).. It tells the story of a mermaid or selkie, a seal-woman who can assume a human shape on land. She has found her seal skin again and is returning to the sea, leaving her daughter and husband behind. That's why the song sounds so sad and wistful. It's been recorded by many great Irish singers.
