I know this is blasphemous but I have never loved Sandy Denny as much as I'm supposed to, I always found her too restrained, as if she were afraid to let go. I think how you feel about Sandy-era Fairport depends on which you think is the key word in "folk rock." Certainly Fairport with Sandy were terrific in making folk music "relevant," (and I do prefer Sandy Denny to Maddy Prior's rather cold vocals for Steeleye Span) but freed of her timidity the boys discover a greater energy in music written before electricity. This is my favorite rendition of the 12 or so Matty Groves I know, Brilliant!

OOOh, like this version. Always liked this song best with a bit of heavy guitar, as Maartin Allcock played it with them much later on.

Mr Swarbrick seems fairly proficient, although one feels that he needs some classical technique and perhaps a proper violin

This is, feedback and all, the definitive version - Simon does sing it best.

how comes Dave Mattacks doesn't appear in any list of the Greatest Rock Drummers? so inventive and aggressive, totally jazz-inflected. What this guy plays here is on the same level as Ian Paice, Phil Collins etc. - and Simon Nicol is the one who sings this song best..

@olliemelodeonman It's a bold statement, but I think this might be the definitive version! And yes, I'll be uploading more from this show.
