Faded Coat Of Blue

My brave boy sleeps in his faded coat of blue

In a lonely grave unknown lies a heart that beats so true

He sank faint and hungry among the famished brave

And they laid him sad and lonely within a nameless grave

No more the bugle calls oh weary one

Rest noble spirits in their graves unknown

For we'll find you and know you among the good and true

Where a robe of white is given for a faded coat of blue

He cried "Give me water and just a little crumb

And my mother she will bless you through all the years to come

And tell my sweet sister so gentle good and true

That I'll meet her up in Heaven in my faded coat of blue"

No dear one was nigh him to close his mild blue eyes

No gentle voice was by him to give him sweet replies

No stone marks the lonely sod on a lad so brave and true

In a lonely grave he's sleeping in his faded coat of blue

Years ago I went to see a very young couple on an old country farm. In the passage there hung several family portraits. I paused before one of them in particular and studied it for a long time. "This one looks remarkably like Gideon Scheepers," I said. It was he, they told me, much to my surprise. He was their grandmother son. Caught and executed as a Colonial rebel during the Anglo-Boer War. He was buried in secret and his grave was never found. His mother refused to believe that he was dead, and till the day she died herself, she waited for him to come home. She always believed that they still secretly held him prisoner, and that one day there would be a knock on her door, and her boy would be standing there, smiling. This song always makes me think of the very young and handsome man he was, and of his hopeful mother who slowly grew old, but never lost hope. His uniform was not blue, but the song is universal. It speaks of many boys in lonely graves from many wars, and many mothers who waited in vain. Some are waiting even now. The story is much older than the song. It is as old as war itself.

Yes, A.P. Carter was tall. His wife (Sara) and sister-in-law (Maybelle) often played their instruments sitting down. June Carter (Mrs. Johnny Cash) tells about the old days of Mother Maybelle and Aunt Sara on a really lovely, relaxed Pete Seeger TV show from 1969, with Johnny Cash. Both are so young and natural. Maybelle and Sara were both still alive at the time. By the way, folk process means that even a composed old song gets changed. Look at the Wreck of the 97. So, I also hear Spanish. Logical. I think June mentions the Spanish-American War, still fresh in the 1930s. Again, in World War I, Southerners served in the U.S. Army (Yankee Army?) and wore the (formerly hated) coat of blue, but the military aspect was more important by then.

Lots of North-South rancor, maybe, when this song was recorded? To avoid Civil War/racism to-do, the Carters switched lyrics to the more "Yankee Doodle"/acceptable/reuniting Spanish American War -- 1890s were period of Civil War reconciliation (monumentation, grand reunions, establishment of military parks) in the U.S.

Someone commented that this was written after the Civil War..however, notice the line "...he fell faint and hungry among the Spanish Brave" indicating that this was written about a soldier in the Spanish American war which was a few decades later. In any case, this is a gem of a song and is beautifully performed by the Royal Family of Country and Folk music!
