@nlanguiano just as well you could say "who cares if this is metal or pop. music is music. noise is noise." this is ok if you just want to hear and enjoy music. but if you make music, it does matter if you play e.g. black metal or power metal. to understand the diversity of music, you must be able to differentiate the existing genres and subgenres. this gives you a basic knowledge from which you can create your own musical style.
