Thank you for this, I remenber this record being released here in England and was absolutely knocked out by the sheer quality. At that time Esther had just began her solo career and I concluded it was too good for the general public to make a hit. Actually there are a couple of words in the lyrics and a change of tempo on this video different from the original recording, and I must say that I prefer this arrangement to the record. But of course both are quite wonderful.

Thank you for posting this fine performance. I haven't heard this song since 1968. Does anyone know who else may have done the male vocalist version I heard back then on AM radio in Seattle??? I was surprised to find it was just an instrumental on the Wiiliams LP, thinking it was him who sang it on the radio!

Thank you for posting this video. I knew it had words, having performed it as part of a mulitmedia presentation of Mason Williams' work back 3/74 at Bergen County (NJ) Community College and at Orrie deNooyer Auditorium in Hackensack. Mason was gracious enough not to charge us anything for putting his work out there. I still have the "Handmade" LP. I wish I still had the script, and G-d knows not many folks had video cameras to have recorded it. Being male, I didn't sing the words as Esther.

I know it's probably awful of me to say, but I had no idea that this song actually had lyrics! I was only ever familiar with the instrumental version and just happened to stumble across this video. Thank you so very much for sharing... =)

The male performer may have been Dick Smothers. He released an album about then titled Sat Night at the World and included other great covers of Smile, Turnaround and Fools Rush In. Great album. You should be able to find a vinyl copy still at a retro/oldies 2nd hand music store. -BsktbllJB

Thank you for posting this beautiful song, written not by Mason Williams, but by San Diego's premiere folk musician in the 60s, Walt Richards. Mason was beginning to become successful in the L.A. scene and bought that and one other song from Walt for $50.00. One night I was lying in bed, listening to the radio, and I heard that song. Like a dummy, I woke up Walt with "Hey, I heard your song on the radio!" I had heard him singing the two songs a few weeks earlier. Walt, YOU THE MAN! Be well.

@lancitos Actually it's just possible that Barbara was influenced by Esther style. She has been around the longer and is a year older than BS. What's more likely though is that it's just the similar Jewish way about them both.

I didn't know this had words! I thought I should hear a recording because I'm learning to play this on the guitar, and it is really hard!!! She has a great voice btw:) 5*****
