LYRICS

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy.

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy.

All around in my home town

They're trying to track me down.

They say they want to bring me in guilty

For the killing of a deputy,

For the life of a deputy.

But I say:

I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defense.

I shot the sheriff, and they say it is a capital offense.

Sheriff john brown always hated me;

For what I don't know.

Every time that I plant a seed

He said, kill it before it grows.

He said, kill it before it grows.

I say:

I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defense.

I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defense.

Freedom came my way one day

And I started out of town.

All of a sudden I see sheriff john brown

Aiming to shoot me down.

So I shot, I shot him down.

I say:

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy.

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy.

Reflexes got the better of me

And what is to be must be.

Every day the bucket goes to the well,

But one day the bottom will drop out,

Yes, one day the bottom will drop out.

But I say:

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy, oh no.

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy, oh no.

i do not own this

"I shot the sheriff, but-it was not on this big-gui-tar..." wrong guitar picture, bub. Try a black strat. The 335 was an earlier Clapton sound(Cream, etc- ie: "pre-solo career").

The great Yvonne Elliman does backing vocals on this. Still sounds fresh and relevant now.

Bob's version is the rendition with greater soul. Eric's version may have less soul evident in the vocal arrangement but the guitar arrangement and overall orchestration is slamming! Two great versions... period.

This song is a classic. I wonder if y'all know it is a true story. Sheriff John Brown was a real man. I can not remember the truth about this story, but my parents told me it is true. This has always been one of my all time favorite older songs. Even though it is long before my time, the fact it is a true story totally fascinates me. I still have and I know I will always have many wonderful memories attached to this song. Anyone who wants the details of the true events this song plays out, google the name Sheriff John Brown.

I figured it out one day suddenly, while driving. The sheriff hated him, we got that. He took his deputy out to get the guy and they found him. The deputy did not want to commit cold blooded murder so the sheriff shot him, planning to tell the townspeople that our guy had shot the deputy. He turned to get our guy but he was too quick for him and shot the sheriff in self-defense. Thus, he did NOT shoot the deputy, as he says.
