"Elvis Presley is regarded as one of the most important figures of 20th-century popular culture. He had a versatile voice and unusually wide success encompassing many genres, including country, pop ballads, gospel, and blues. He is the best-selling solo artist in the history of popular music.Nominated for 14 competitive Grammys, he won three, and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36. He has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame."

-Wikipedia

"I know he invented rock and roll, in a manner of speaking, but ... that's not why he's worshiped as a god today. He's worshiped as a god today because in addition to inventing rock and roll he was the greatest ballad singer this side of Frank Sinatra—because the spiritual translucence and reined-in gut sexuality of his slow weeper and torchy pop blues still activate the hormones and slavish devotion of millions of female human beings worldwide."

Robert Christgau

December 24, 1985

"Elvis Presley is a supreme figure in American life, one whose presence, no matter how banal or predictable, brooks no real comparisons. ... The cultural range of his music has expanded to the point where it includes not only the hits of the day, but also patriotic recitals, pure country gospel, and really dirty blues. ... Elvis has emerged as a great artist, a great rocker, a great purveyor of schlock, a great heart throb, a great bore, a great symbol of potency, a great ham, a great nice person, and, yes, a great American."

On this day in 1957 {September 5th} Elvis Presley recorded "Treat Me Nice" at the Radio Recorders studio in West Hollywood, California. One month later on October 21st it entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #18 and spent 10 weeks on the Top 100. Chances are it would have been higher on the chart except for the fact it was the B-side to "Jailhouse Rock", which was #1 for 7 weeks & stayed on the Top 100 for more than a half-year {27 weeks}, so it got most of the attention.
